The Senate Commerce Committee advanced the Telecommunications Cybersecurity and Resilience Act, a bipartisan bill introduced by Senators Ted Cruz and Mark Warner. The legislation aims to protect U.S. communication networks from cyber threats, following recent major hacks described as among the worst in the nation’s history.

The bill would create a working group of government and private-sector experts to develop voluntary cybersecurity best practices for telecommunications companies. It would also establish a voluntary certification process to encourage companies to adopt the practices, using a collaborative, risk-based approach without imposing direct regulations.
