Ford Motor Company said Friday that U.S. sales fell 6.6% year over year in the third quarter. The company sold 509,764 vehicles.

Ford attributed the decline to the phaseout of the Escape and Lincoln Corsair crossover models. It also cited stronger consumer demand for hybrid powertrains amid high gasoline prices.

Truck sales, including the F-Series, rose 0.5%. They totaled 315,112 units.

Maverick sales jumped just over 20%. Ford sold 41,970 of the pickup trucks during the quarter.
