Shares of ETHV dropped to $26.50 in pre-market trading Thursday, down 3.25% from the prior close, as a broad wave of selling hit crypto, tech, and growth assets simultaneously. For shareholders in this spot Ethereum ETF, the question isn't whether the fund tracks Ethereum faithfully — it does — but whether the macro storm battering digital assets has further to run. Ethereum ETF ETHV Slides 3.2% as Chip Rout and Fed Rate-Hike Fears Collide — Can Fresh Institutional Inflows Stem the Bleeding?
Shares of the VanEck Ethereum ETF tumbled to $26.50 in pre-market trading, shedding 3.25% from Wednesday's close, as a global risk-off wave hammered crypto, chips, and growth assets in lockstep. The selloff isn't about Ethereum specifically — it's about a market suddenly repricing how long borrowing costs stay painful for speculative assets.
A Semiconductor Meltdown Is Dragging Crypto Down With It. Bitcoin fell 1.2% and Ether dropped 1.74% as a selloff in semiconductor stocks spanning Asia to North America drove a broad risk-off move.
Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 1.8% and a semiconductor ETF slid 3% in premarket trading, while Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 4%. When tech investors dump high-growth bets, crypto — which trades as a leveraged bet on risk appetite — gets caught in the same current. ETHV, which holds actual Ether and mirrors its price, has no way to sidestep that drag.
The Fed Could Hike Rates in Two Weeks, and That Changes the Math. Chances that the Federal Reserve will hike rates at its July meeting are rising — CME's FedWatch tool now estimates a 46.5% probability of a 25-basis-point increase.
The federal funds rate sits at 3.50%–3.75%, and the PCE inflation gauge hit 4.1% in May with core at 3.4%. Higher rates raise the opportunity cost of owning assets like Ether that generate no cash flow, making every percentage point of yield on Treasury bonds a competitive threat to crypto allocations.
Institutional Money Just Started Returning — This Selloff Tests That Trend. Ethereum ETF inflows into U.S. spot products hit $96 million in the first three trading days of the current week, already surpassing the prior week's full total of $84 million.
That prior week was itself the first positive reading after an eight-week run of net outflows. The question for ETHV shareholders: does today's macro shock reverse the nascent return of institutional buying, or do dip-buyers treat it as an entry point? BlackRock's competing Ether fund alone captured $45.3 million of a single day's $53.8 million in inflows, highlighting that VanEck must fight for a shrinking pool of new dollars.
Ether's Own Technicals Are Flashing Caution. The Fear & Greed Index shows a score of 22, registering "Extreme Fear," and on the daily chart Ethereum is bearish, with both the 50-day and 200-day moving averages falling.
Early 2026 already saw a sharp downturn tied to recession fears and insider selling by Ethereum's co-founder. With Ether still roughly 64% below its August 2025 all-time high near $5,000, ETHV holders are betting on a recovery that macro headwinds keep pushing further away.
