Shares of Grayscale's Ethereum Trust slid to $19.27, down 3.51%, as escalating U.S.-Iran tensions around the Strait of Hormuz triggered a classic flight from risky assets, dragging Ethereum toward $2,450 and punishing digital-asset funds across the board.
Rising Oil Prices Act Like a Tax on Every Risk Bet ETHE Slides 3.5% as Hormuz Flare-Up and Rate-Hike Fears Squeeze Crypto — Can Ethereum's Staking Yield Cushion the Blow?
Shares of Grayscale's Ethereum Staking ETF tumbled to $19.27, erasing last week's gains in a single session, as a fresh round of U.S.-Iran hostilities sent oil surging and reignited fears that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates this month — a toxic combination for assets like Ethereum that produce no traditional income.
Oil Above $90 Feeds Straight Into Inflation and Rate Bets
Brent crude climbed above $90 a barrel on Monday as tensions escalated in the Middle East.
U.S. forces targeted two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, while Tehran responded with attacks on the UAE and Jordan, marking a resumption of hostilities after roughly a month of relative calm.
A supertanker caught fire in the Strait after hitting two naval mines, underscoring the persistent risks facing Hormuz shipping. Higher energy costs feed directly into consumer prices, making the Fed's inflation fight harder — and that is what drives the next domino to fall on crypto.
A September Rate Hike Is Now the Base Case
The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.79%, reaching its highest level since January 2025, while the two-year yield climbed to 4.35%, up from around 3.5% at the start of the year.
According to the CME Group's FedWatch tool, there's currently a 66.4% chance the Fed raises rates by 25 basis points later this month. When government bonds pay nearly 5% risk-free, the appeal of speculative assets like Ethereum — which carries extreme volatility and no guaranteed return — fades fast. That repricing is what ETHE holders are absorbing today.
Ethereum ETF Outflows Were Already a Problem Before This Selloff
Investors have withdrawn from Ethereum's ETFs in most months of 2026, and the withdrawals got heaviest in May, when they pulled $540.88 million out and ETH fell 12.6%.
Investors have pulled a net $4.83 billion out of Bitcoin ETFs across 2026, and the inflows in August have recovered only $463.83 million of that. ETHE's staking feature — the trust rebranded to Grayscale Ethereum Staking ETF on January 5, 2026 — generates a modest yield ( gross staking rewards of roughly 2.75% ), but that is easily overwhelmed when the underlying asset drops several percent in hours.
Technical Levels and Whale Positioning Add Fragility
Ethereum is now testing the 0.618 Fibonacci retracement at $2,438.85 as support.
A whale recently opened a 10x long position worth $102.3 million with a liquidation price of $2,241. If Ethereum breaks below that zone, forced selling from leveraged traders could accelerate losses, dragging ETHE further. For shareholders, the calculus is blunt: until oil cools and rate-hike odds retreat, every geopolitical headline is a headwind.
