Shares of the iShares Ethereum Trust ETF jumped 4.9% to $19.47 after the August consumer price index — a measure of how fast everyday prices are rising — landed right on economists' forecasts, briefly calming a market rattled by inflation anxiety. The CPI rose 0.4% for the month, putting the 12-month increase at 3.4%, both in line with the Dow Jones consensus. The relief rally reverses pressure from a hotter-than-expected producer price report on September 10 and oil prices that have been climbing amid Middle East tensions.

A "Good Enough" Number Still Leaves the Fed in Play

Core CPI — which strips out food and energy — came in at 0.3% monthly, a tenth of a point above the forecast, while the annual core rate matched estimates at 2.4%. That's not cool enough to kill the rate-hike debate. The Fed held rates at 3.50%–3.75% in July by a narrow 9–3 vote, with three officials preferring an immediate increase.

Post-CPI, Kalshi prediction-market odds for a rate hold surged to roughly 83% , a dramatic swing from the ~56% hike probability priced before the report. For ETHA holders, a hold on September 16 would remove a near-term headwind, since higher rates limit crypto price growth because assets like Ethereum don't pay interest to investors.

Ethereum Has Outrun Bitcoin Lately — but ETF Money Is Slowing

Ethereum gained 33% from August 11 to September 10, compared with 23% for Bitcoin. Yet fresh-money flows tell a different story. Weekly inflows to Ethereum spot ETFs fell sharply, and funds recorded their first net outflow since August 11 on September 8.

For the year, Ethereum spot ETFs still lead with roughly $863 million in net inflows versus about $1 billion in net outflows for Bitcoin products — but momentum is fading. If today's rally doesn't reignite subscriptions, ETHA's price gains rest on thin institutional backing.

A Reverse Stock Split Signals BlackRock Is Watching the Price Tag

On August 4, iShares filed for a reverse stock split for ETHA, to take effect after the close on October 5, with shares trading on a split-adjusted basis October 6. Reverse splits often aim to keep a fund's share price above levels where some institutional buyers and platforms impose restrictions — a sign BlackRock is managing perception around a fund whose net asset value was $5.55 billion as of late July.

The Bottom Line: Today's CPI print bought Ethereum bulls breathing room, and prediction markets now strongly favor a rate hold next week. But with core inflation still sticky and oil elevated, ETHA's sharp one-day bounce may be borrowing from future returns rather than starting a sustained climb.
