A new appraisal well at Equinor’s Afrodite discovery in the North Sea indicates recoverable gas volumes are more than twice the previous estimate. The updated estimate for recoverable gas and condensate is 77 million to 180 million barrels of oil equivalent. The discovery is notable for its size in a mature area of the Norwegian continental shelf.
Equinor considers the find commercially viable and is planning a potential subsea development tied back to the nearby Kvitebjørn platform. Using existing infrastructure could enable faster, lower-cost development and allow the gas to reach the European market.
Equinor operates the license with a 60% stake. Orlen, DNO and Wellesley Petroleum are partners.
