Ecopetrol and Petrobras have concluded an offshore exploration campaign in the Colombian Caribbean, adding to evidence of the region’s natural gas potential.
The campaign involved a $1 billion investment. It ran for two and a half years and included five wells.
The partners discovered natural gas at the Sandia-1 well in August 2026 and the Copoazú-1 well in March 2026. These finds build on earlier discoveries in the area, including at the Uchuva-1 well in the Tayrona block. Together, the discoveries confirm the presence of a substantial gas-bearing system.
The partners will now conduct appraisal activities to assess the extent of the gas accumulations and plan for potential development. The offshore resources could help Colombia increase domestic gas supply and support long-term energy security.
