Intel (INTC) and South Korea’s SK Hynix are holding exploratory talks to manufacture memory chips in the United States. According to Reuters, this collaboration would mark the first time SK Hynix produces memory chips on U.S. soil.
The deal may involve SK Hynix leasing space at Intel’s delayed Ohio manufacturing campus or forming a joint venture. A global memory chip shortage driven by surging artificial intelligence demand is motivating the discussions.
Shares for both Intel and SK Hynix climbed approximately 3% to 5% following the report. Intel declined to comment on the speculation, while SK Hynix stated it is reviewing various business measures but has determined nothing yet.
