Standard Bank Group has become Africa’s most valuable bank by market capitalization. As of late May 2026, the bank’s market value reached approximately R517 billion. This valuation places it ahead of Capitec Bank at R511 billion and FirstRand at R503 billion.
This development marks the first time all three South African banking giants have concurrently held valuations exceeding R500 billion. FirstRand began 2026 as the sector leader, while Capitec briefly held the top spot in late 2025.
Standard Bank’s ascent followed strong forward guidance presented during its March 2026 Capital Markets Day. The group projected consistent earnings growth and a high return on equity. These projections strengthened investor confidence and drove the bank to the top of the market.
