Health insurer Cigna will stop covering GLP-1 weight-loss drugs like Wegovy and Zepbound for its employees on July 1. This decision applies exclusively to Cignaβs internal health plan. Coverage remains unchanged for external customers and employees using these medications for type 2 diabetes.
The company cited the increased availability of alternative weight management options as the reason for the change. Cigna will continue to cover older, generic anti-obesity medications.
Current users can obtain refills until June 30. After this deadline, employees must pay cash for these drugs. These out-of-pocket payments will not count toward annual insurance deductibles.
