BWX Technologies' (BWXT) BANR microreactor has been selected for a transportable nuclear power plant planned for Belledune, New Brunswick. The project brings together Prodigy Clean Energy, Pabineau First Nation and Eel River Bar First Nation as an Indigenous-led clean energy initiative.
The plant is planned to generate up to 50 megawatts of electricity using BWXT's high-temperature gas-cooled reactor technology. BWXT will fabricate the units primarily at its Ontario facilities.
The pilot could serve as a blueprint for a fleet of similar transportable plants for remote markets in Canada and around the world. The project targets operation in the early 2030s. The Government of New Brunswick has signed a Letter of Intent to purchase the electricity generated.
