A French National Assembly committee has proposed a generational tobacco ban that could affect British American Tobacco (BTI) and other major firms. The committee adopted an amendment on October 15 that would prohibit the sale of tobacco products to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009.

If enacted, the law would take effect on January 1, 2027. It would make adults born on or after the cutoff date legally unable to buy tobacco.

The proposal follows a nearly identical U.K. law that received Royal Assent in April 2026. The amendment has cross-party support but must still pass the full Assembly and Senate to become law.
