The Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners approved a three-month pilot program with Axon Enterprise. The program will equip some city-owned streetlights with Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras. The trial comes at no cost to the city.
This approval is separate from a potential 10-year, $235 million equipment contract with Axon. The City Council will consider this contract.
The LAPD initiated the pilot program after choosing not to renew a contract with previous ALPR vendor Flock. This decision stemmed from concerns over data ownership and privacy.
This test expands Axon's relationship with one of the nation's largest police departments. It moves the company into fixed surveillance infrastructure.
