Amazon, X-energy and American Electric Power (AEP) announced a Joint Development Agreement to explore a 960 MW small modular reactor (SMR) project in Indiana. The proposed plant would comprise 12 Xe-100 units and be located near a retired coal plant. It is intended to provide clean, baseload power for the region’s growing energy needs.

Amazon is providing development capital for the project, its second collaboration with X-energy. The initiative is part of Amazon’s broader strategy to bring more than 5 GW of new nuclear capacity to the U.S. grid. Amazon aims to achieve that by 2039 to support its operations and improve grid reliability with clean energy.

The project brings together AEP’s operational expertise, X-energy’s advanced reactor technology and Amazon’s financial backing to develop a long-term energy solution.
