The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) stated that Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft must remove barriers for customers switching between cloud providers or using multiple services. This directive follows a period of engagement where the regulator raised concerns about market competitiveness. The CMA acknowledged progress but stated more steps could enhance customer choice.
Both companies made voluntary commitments, including reducing data transfer (egress) fees and improving interoperability. However, the CMA remains unsatisfied that all issues have been resolved. The regulator will continue to monitor the situation. It has kept the possibility of a more formal, in-depth market investigation under review. Another update is planned for spring 2027.
