Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced a strategic partnership with AI startup Anthropic on July 22, 2026. Anthropic will purchase up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 AI accelerators. Deployment of the hardware is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027. AMD also committed a strategic equity investment of up to $5 billion in the AI firm.

The agreement positions AMD to compete more directly against Nvidia in the high-stakes AI hardware sector. Both companies will collaborate on a multi-year engineering project using the Claude AI model to optimize AMD’s ROCm software. This collaboration also aims to enhance AMD GPU performance. AMD will further adopt Claude internally for its own development teams.

AMD shares declined in premarket trading despite the significance of the announcement. Initial market reaction appeared mixed following the disclosure of the deal.
