Applied Materials has unveiled its Equipment and Process Innovation and Commercialization (EPIC) Center in Sunnyvale, California. The $5 billion investment will create the world’s largest semiconductor research and development facility.

The center aims to accelerate development and commercialization of chip technologies for the AI era by shortening the time from concept to high-volume manufacturing.

The facility brings Applied Materials’ engineers together with chipmakers, equipment suppliers and university researchers. Founding partners include TSMC, Intel, Samsung, Micron and SK hynix.

The partners will be able to develop materials, equipment and process technologies in parallel, with the goal of speeding up the innovation cycle.
