The FBI removed an Accenture contractor on Monday after a data breach exposed personal information belonging to thousands of bureau employees. An FBI official said the breach resulted from the contractor’s failure to install a required security patch on a platform managed by a third party.

The FBI did not officially identify the company or software. Sources identified the company as Accenture and the platform as Oracle’s PeopleSoft human resources system. The exposed information included details about employees’ counterintelligence roles and their medical records.

Accenture acknowledged that it continues to support the FBI but did not comment on the contractor or the failure to apply the patch.
