SK hynix, Samsung, and Micron have ended internal development of Compute Express Link (CXL) controllers. This strategic move prioritizes core DRAM shipments and prevents the cannibalization of existing memory sales.

SK hynix is reassigning its controller R&D personnel to processing-in-memory (PIM) development. The company will now source CXL controllers from external partners including Marvell, Montage Technology, and Astera Labs.

This shift reflects an industry-wide preference for collaborative supply chains over vertical integration. The strategy aims to meet the high memory demands of the artificial intelligence sector through specialized partnerships.
